Wood Care Guide

How do I care for lacquered/coated pieces?

Lacquered pieces are coated in multiple layers of satin polyurethane.  Keep these pieces away from liquids such as rubbing alcohol, which can melt away the lacquer protective coating or smudge it into an uneven surface.  Instead, you can wipe these pieces with a cloth and any solution that is used to clean everyday wooden surfaces.  If it is safe to use on wooden floors, it should be safe to use on lacquer coated pieces.  These pieces are mildly water resistant, but do not drench these pieces in water or leave water on them for prolonged periods of time.

How do I care for wooden kitchen utensils (eg. wooden spoons, cutting/serving boards, trivets, etc.)?

These pieces do not have any types of lacquer coating on them to keep them food-safe.  To preserve these pieces, it is recommended to use food-grade mineral oil to oil down your pieces every few months to keep the wood moisturized and prevent cracking from use.  Do not put these pieces in the dishwasher , instead, wash with dish soap under luke-warm water with the soft side of the sponge.  Pat dry and let it air dry.

How do I oil kitchen utensils?

For un-coated pieces such as wooden spoons or cutting/serving boards, please use food-grade mineral oil to wipe down these pieces to keep them moisturized and prevent cracking.  You can find food-grade mineral oil easily online or your local home goods stores.
How to apply:

  1. Pour a moderate amount of mineral oil on the wooden piece.
  2. Using a clean cloth or a piece of paper towel, wipe down the wooden piece, spreading the oil generously over the wood's surface.  Make sure the oil reaches all the surfaces of the wood.
  3. Let the piece air dry for at least 24 hours or overnight before next use.  I normally set my pieces vertically when drying to minimize the surface against the table.
  4. Repeat this procedure every few weeks to a month.
